from flicks both rented and seen at the theater:
obiwan kenobi
he was my fave character from the OT and ewan's performance sealed the deal. i love his flaws, his frailities, his !*&!@&*^ awesome lightsabing skillz.
yoder
i've always like the yoder from the OT but never as much as the other characters. he was just the eccentrically cool green muppet. now though, after the prequels, damn, he's like, wow.
john preston (equilibrium)
not the most original character growth arc ever (how many heroes start off as bad and then end up being good cuz they realized the necessity of "doing the right thing"?). christian bale brings the pathos alive though. the only bit of pathos in this "see the cool new gun-fu action!" fest. and he looked good doing it.
abe no seime (onmyoji, onmyoji II)
the most badass ancient nipponese magician ever. he brings out the ph34R without resorting to kung-fu...patches up the bad with only a few well-whispered incantations and a flick of two fingers. does all this while running around in a bizarre apron-n-bib costume getup no less. too kool for skool.
penguin gang (madagascar)
brothers do their own thing and be damned to all who disbelieve!!
jim hawkins (treasure planet)
it's been a long time since i've watched a disney movie and got the disney tingles. or cried at the plight of the hero. this was an awesome movie because it never lost its focus on the main character. no stupid songs or romance crap getting in the way. just pure jim hawkins kicking ass all the way.
buford dill (nobody's baby)
a bit fucked up on the outset (aren't we all) but there's always that lil lump of gold inside his character that shines. buford does good when it counts. i wish all fucked up people could be like him.
