more wax on, more wax off.

yet another copy/paste job from cc.net...

there's killing the average bad guy and then there's the summary execution of a sith lord who happens to have a MASSIVE hold on the current government. the jedi order's main job is to keep the peace in the galaxy and insure the continuation of the republic. executing palpy without the consent of the senate is taking away the people's right to think for themselves and decide their own fate. mace steps over the line in believing so highly of the jedi order's purpose. not only is presenting palp to the people's justice the right thing to do from the viewpoint of procedure, it is the right thing to do if people are to continue to live in a free and open society.

of course, even if mace had let palpy go and be judged by the people there is no guarantee that there will be eventual peace because most of the general public don't even understand the threat that is the sith/dark side -- nor would pulling down the vast influence of the chancellor be easy. to be fair to mace, he was doing what he thought to be for the good of the republic and he really was stuck in between a rock and a hard place. to have killed palpy though, it might have brought him personally closer to the dark side because his motivations stem from pride and over-confidence...all of which would be further exacerbated once he'd killed palpy and might have quite likely been seen as the great savior of the people (blah blah blah).
